After being a loyal listener to The High Performance Podcast throughout lockdown, the natural progression for me was to order the book they ardently plugged at the start of each episode…and I managed to get a signed copy, which no doubt came with added high performance.
What’s it all about?
‘High Performance’ dives deep into the mindset, habits, and principles that drive some of the most successful individuals. Drawing on insights from acclaimed sportspeople, leaders, and thinkers, the authors paint a compelling picture of what it means to be a truly high performer. Rather than focusing on innate talent, Jake and Damien reiterate that mindset and dedication is just as pertinent as natural skill. Something someone like myself is always keen to hear – there is hope!
“Talent might be the spark of high performance. But habits are what keep the fire burning.”
What did we learn?
Mindset matters: The book underpins that thinking like a high performer is the precursor to acting like one. It brings forth the philosophy of ‘Be, Do, Have’, emphasising the significance of internalisation before manifestation.
The power of responsibility: One standout lesson is the difference between fault and responsibility. High performers understand that while not everything that happens to them is their fault, how they respond is entirely within their control.
Motivation and values: Delving into Self Determination Theory, the authors explore the gradient from internal to external motivation, stressing that true motivation stems from alignment with core values. You must know your values to truly excel.
Emotional intelligence: Our emotional responses can be both an asset and a liability. The key is in understanding and managing these emotions effectively in order to propel us towards our purpose.
The Importance of flexibility and adaptability: High performers recognise that growth demands adaptability and therefore a growth mindset. They remain open to change and are unafraid to pivot when necessary.
Consistency and discipline: Drawing on insights from renowned figures like Clive Woodward and Alex Ferguson, the book reinforces the significance of non-negotiable habits and how they form the bedrock of top performance.
Leadership and culture: The latter chapters dig into the importance of leadership and carving out a positive culture. With insights from influential figures like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Mauricio Pochettino, the book sheds light on how successful teams are built on a foundation of trust, shared objectives, and mutual respect.
What did we think?
This book is a masterclass in understanding the components of success. Jake Humphrey and Damien Hughes have crafted a narrative that is both insightful and engaging, weaving together anecdotes and lessons from a plethora of admired personalities. As well as success stories and theoretical knowledge, it also walks you through actionable takeaways to provide a comprehensive guide to help aspiring leaders take their performance to the next level.
In a world that often equates success with innate talent, ‘High Performance’ is a refreshing take on the power of discipline, mindset, and consistent effort. It’s a must-read for anyone looking to push the boundaries of their potential and cultivate a high-performance mindset.
And of course, I’d also recommend The High Performance Podcast for your daily dose of motivation which is available from all good distributors.
