It’s always an exciting time when you’re looking for a new member of staff to join the team – but looking through endless CVs can be a thankless task.
However, if you’re searching for a talented marketer or PR professional, help is at hand!
We’ve narrowed down the key skills you need to be on the look-out for; the ones that every modern-day marketer needs in the arsenal – and you need in your team.
Knowledge of social media advertising
While plenty of people know their way around social media – with 3.96 billion people globally actively using it in some way – ads are a whole different ball game.
Basically, ads mean you can target your content to the best, most appropriate (and therefore receptive) audience, which requires a whole host of analytical skills. What’s more, different platforms require different strategies and tactics; for each one, marketers need to learn how to set a budget, target the right audience, track results and perform tests to make sure the ads are performing.
SEO
If you want your business to be found, you need to be hitting that first page of Google results, which is where search engine optimisation (SEO) comes in.
Again, this is more than simply having a website or a social media account; SEO involves researching and using keywords, upping your company’s domain authority and boosting your backlinks.
It’s no longer an added extra, but an integral part of your marketing strategy.
Google Analytics
Marketers today have never had access to so much data, so you’re looking for someone who can interpret that data effectively and make strategic decisions based upon it.
Software such as Google Analytics makes it increasingly easy to track whether a campaign has been a success or not, and, if not, which elements need further work.
Storytelling
All this is not to say that today’s marketer needs a wholly digital focus; content marketing is still an essential component of driving traffic and converting leads.
That’s why any potential marketing hire still needs those core storytelling and writing skills, along with
good spelling and grammar and the ability to construct a coherent, cohesive narrative across a variety of content.
Good interpersonal skills
Again, despite the digital focus of a lot of marketing activity these days, the ability to communicate well in person is still incredibly important.
After all, people buy from people, and so whoever is in charge of your marketing needs to be able to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders, from your clients to your CEO.
